General Information About Learning Disabilities

(Click to be taken to the relevant website)

Learning Disabilities Online- A great, general website about learning disabilities

Schwab Learning - Started by Charles Schwab, who has dyslexia, this website is a great reference for parents about helping kids with a variety of learning differences.

All Kinds of Minds- Dr. Mel Levine's website- great references for parents and educators about understanding and helping kids with learning disabilities- has a email monthly newsletter.

LD Pride.net- a great website that has many useful tools and information, including information about multiple intelligences

Experts And Their Books:

Rick Lavoie-It's so much work to be your friend:Helping a child with learning disabilities find social success

Dr. Mel Levine, MD: A Mind at a Time; The Myth of Laziness; Ready or Not, Here Life Comes; Educational Care; Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics

Dr. Robert Brooks: Wonderful author and speaker! Books include Raising Resilient Children, Touching a Student's Heart and Mind:The Mindset of the Effective Educator and The Self-Disciplined Child

Michael Thompson - The Author of "Raising Cain- Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys" and "The Pressured Child: Helping Your Child Find Success in School and in Life" among others. Michael Thompson is a wonderful speaker, and you should definitely take advantage of any opportunity to see his presentations in person. He had a great piece all parents should read, entitled "Eight Steps to Better Parent-Teacher Conferences" published in Time Magazine- Click here to be linked to the page on the web.

Edward Hallowell, MD- Dr. Hallowell has authored many books including "Connect"; "Delivered From Distraction" "Answers to Distraction", and he himself, has ADHD. He is teaming up with Michael Thompson to present an online course in January, 2007

William Sears, MD- Dr. Sears, his wife, Martha Sears, and their sons have a great website that joins their already well-known books on parenting and raising children. The ADD Book, The Discipline Book, The Successful Child, and The Baby Book, are just a few of my favorites.

Sally Shaywitz, MD- Dr. Shaywitz and her husband are well-known physicians who co-direct the Yale Center For the Study of Learning. She has written Overcoming Dyslexia, a book that shows, in part, how early detection of potential reading disorders and proper instruction can help re-wire the brain and make it more efficient in its ability to read. Simply amazing research from a well-known and respected physician.

Legal Information and Resources

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act This link takes you to Wright's Law, and information on Section 504 accommodations in the classroom.  Peter Wright is a well known educational law expert, and his site has great advice on all education law issues.

The IDEA: Individuals with Disabilities Education Act: The IDEA changed significantly in 2004.  This law governs how children with learning disabilities are educated in public schools, including access to services, individualized education plans, also known as IEP's, evaluations, testing and the like.

No Child Left Behind : Wright's law has alot of great information on the No Child Left Behind Act and how it impacts students with learning disabilities.  I have strong feelings about the NCLB, as it is often referred to, mostly because the testing is being used to punish children, teachers, and schools, rather than to serve as meaningful diagnostic information of where a child's weaknesses are, and how we can better meet their educational needs.
